Bill Jamerson Program in Niagara

Bill Jamerson Program on August 9th at Niagara Public Library Bill Jamerson will appear at the Niagara Public Library on Tuesday, August 9th at 6:30 p.m. and present a program entitled "Daylight in the Swamp." Get set for some hilarious songs and backwoods tales! From swampers to skidders and teamsters to loaders, Bill takes his audience back to a time when men worked long days in the woods through cold winters. In Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota the lure of "King Pine" attracted many of the early settlers. Bill tells the story of these colorful characters along with the struggles they faced, the simple pleasures they enjoyed and the disappointments they endured. "Bill has appeared once before at the Niagara Library doing a presentation on the CCC camps and was a great hit- awesome comments were heard about his previous show and once again we will host Bill to do this entertaining presentation," said Bruce Darne, Niagara Librarian. Mad Dog and Merrill come to the Niagara Library!

Mad Dog and Merrill will be presenting a grilling program on Tuesday, July 12th at 6:30 p.m. at the Niagara Senior Center. Nationally recognized and self-proclaimed Grillologists, Mad Dog and Merrill entertain and educate thousands of backyard enthusiasts every year with the finer points of grilling cuisine. They want nothing more than to make everyone a better griller and have a ton of fun in the process. Mad Dog and Merrill travel the country performing in front of live audiences, writing cookbooks and making videos to show people how easy it is to be creative and entertain in their own backyard. "Join us for an entertaining evening of fun and great tips to help you become better grillers," said Niagara Librarian, Bruce Darne. This program is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to come and see these wonderful television personalities. Cookbooks will be available for purchase. Jeremy Holtz coming to Niagara!

Jeremy Holtz, Wildlife Biologist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, will present an interesting and informative talk on furbearers of Wisconsin on Tuesday, June 14th at 7:00 p.m. at the Niagara Public Library. Jeremy will be talking about several fur-bearing animals native to this area, from mink and muskrat to badgers and bear. Hear about food habits, life history and interesting facts about these animals, plus much more. There will also be some hides available to see and touch. This presentation will feature a talk about books, both fiction and nonfiction, which deals with the chosen topic- the 1950s. Pat will talk about a dozen or more books dealing with this topic and will give everyone in the audience a flyer that lists the titles that she will discuss. "This is a great opportunity to hear about some of the many books that are available to you through the public library on the fascinating topic of the 1950s," said Bruce Darne, Niagara Librarian. Amberg Writer's Group to do Presentation at Niagara Public Library

The Amberg Writer's Group will do a presentation on Tuesday, April 19th at 2:00 p.m. at the Niagara Public Library. The group will each read one of the short stories that they have written and answer any questions that the audience has for them. Some of the members of this group have now been published in magazines, newspapers and literary journals. Niagara Librarian, Bruce Darne, said, "This is a great opportunity for you to see all of the local talent that we have in our area and perhaps spark your desire to join this talented writers group and become a successful writer yourself." This is a free program and is open to everyone.

Books Outside the Box-- "Animal Narratives"

Looking for new books to explore and enjoy? Come to the Renaissance in Marinette at 2 PM on Wednesday, February 16, or Northland Village on Thursday, February 24 at 2 PM, for great book ideas! In these two presentations, Mariel from the Stephenson Public Library will talk about animal narratives. Find out about the man who trains exotic animals for Hollywood pictures, the woman who raised a barn owl from infancy, the African Grey parrot who defies the "bird brain" label, and other true stories of animals in and out of the wild. Mariel will also include fiction tales of animals integral in solving mysteries or keenly enjoyed by their human caretakers. The public is welcome to these free presentations. Soap Making Presentation on March 15th at Niagara Public Library

The Niagara Public Library will have a soap making presentation on March 15th at 7:00 p.m. featuring Kim Schuster. Kim will show how she makes soap (like Grandma used to make) using techniques and many of the oils, herbs, resins and spices from Biblical times. This is a hands-on program in which the audience partipates through all of their senses. You will have the opportunity to make a "washing ball" as part of this program. Kim will also have goodie bags with samples of her products for everyone attending.
Growing up, Kim spent a lot of time outdoors with her family doing activities such as hiking and camping. A big part of her childhood was spent studying and collecting plants and using them to make teas, cough syrups, salves and many other products. Kim's father's background as an inventor and entrepreneur gave her a desire to take her love of nature and develop a business around it. From 1985 through 1994, Kim and her mother had a business producing educational nature programs for children and adults.
After getting a degree in business management, Kim became the financial manager for her family's industrial manufacturing business. Kim also started her own business in 2008 called Hollow Tree Concepts which has its emphasis on soap-making. Her product line also includes lotions, body oils, sugar/salt scrubs and lip balms. Super Bowl Tailgate Cookout at Niagara

The Niagara Public Library, along with the Friends of the Niagara Library, will hold a Super Bowl Tailgate Cookout Fundraiser on Friday, February 4th from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Forward Financial Credit Union in Niagara. Proceeds will go to offset costs of author visits and programs held throughout the year. Some of the featured presentations will be Mad Dog and Merrill, Bill Jamerson (Daylight in the Swamp), and John Walker (A Deer Gets Revenge, A Bucket of Bones).

Jerry Harju to Appear at Niagara Public Library October 18th

The Niagara Public Library will host Jerry Harju on Monday, October 18th at 7:00 p.m. Jerry is a humor writer and book publisher who lives in Marquette, Michigan. He received a degree in engineering mechanics from the University of Michigan in 1957 and completed his formal education with a MS from the University of Southern California in 1985. After thirty years as a manager in the aerospace industry in Southern California, Jerry began writing as a second career. He has written eight books including Northern Reflections, Northern D'Lights, Northern Passages and Northern Memories- these books are collections of humorous autobiographical short stories about growing up in the Upper Peninsula in the 1940s. Jerry's book, The Class of '57, recalls Harju's six years of "higher education" at the University of Michigan. Cold Cash was Jerry's first novel and is a wacky tale about two unschooled amateurs who decide to solve their cash-flow problems by pulling a bank heist and getting away on snowmobiles. Here's What I Think...Way Back When and Our World Was In Black & White are collections of Jerry's columns that have appeared for the past several years in the Marquette newspaper, The Mining Journal.

Author Ron Riekki to Appear at Niagara Public Library on September 7th

Author Ron Riekki will be making an appearance at the Niagara Public Library on Tuesday, September 7th at 7:00 p.m. Ron is the author of the book U.P. which is a complex tale of friendship and brutality. The book, set in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is the story of four teens immersed in an ugly world, one whose threat of violence is always simmering beneath the surface. R.A. Riekki's distinctive characters and their poignant quest for freedom is a swan song to lost youth, redefining the traditional coming of age story. The story is told in four distinct narratives by the four boys which converge into a harrowing and heartbreaking whole. The Marquette Mining Journal had a recent article about this book being turned into a movie along with the help of Sean Penn. Ron is doing a tour to promote his book and will be making numerous appearances, not only around the U.P., but also in Chicago and Kentucky. Take time to come and meet Ron and hear him talk about his book.

I would just like to take a moment to thank all of those individuals who helped out with our Reach A Child Kickoff program. The library collects donations of books for children in crisis situations and gives bags of them to local law enforcement/fire departments to keep in their vehicles to give children who are witness to a traumatic event.

Dennis Weidemann, Author Tour With Slide Show, At Niagara Public Library On July 27th

The Niagara Public Library will be presenting author Dennis Weidemann on Tuesday, July 27th at 7:00 p.m. at the Niagara Public Library. Dennis will be presenting a slide show chronicling the 1,400 mile canoe trip taken by four Iowa farm boys thirty years ago. With beat up canoes, the young explorers pushed off from a park in Minnesota and two and a half months later reached the polar bears of Husdon Bay.
Dennis has written about this adventure in his book "This Water Goes North" which is a tale of near disasters, splendid sunsets, bootleggers, polar bears and the indomitable spirit of youth. The Midwest Book Review says the book "reads like an adventure novel, but is a true-life story...very much recommended, enthralling reading."
"Join us for an exciting and entertaining evening and live this fabulous true adventure story in Dennis's words and pictures," said Bruce Darne, Niagara Librarian.

Mark Wednesday, July 7th at 2:00 p.m. on your calendars when the Niagara Public Library will host author Annie Jacobsen. Annie is the author of four children's books, including Hang On If You Want To Come Along!, Ivar, The Short But Brave Viking, The Terrible Troll Cat and The Tale Of The Troll's Horse. Annie will read one of her books and talk about her experiences of being an author.
Annie is a retired Speech and Language Pathologist who taught for thirty-three years in the public schools in Stoughton, Wisconsin. After teaching, she began writing child-friendly Norwegian folktales. Annie currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin with her husband, Fred, a former Niagara resident.

She's usually tucked inside her kitty condo at the front desk, but sometimes Snowball likes to sneak into the children's room to pick out a new book or spy on the kids. When you visit the library, be sure to say hi to Snowball. If she's not in her kitty condo, please search the children's room and bring her back. Summer Reading Club Signup at the Stephenson Public Library

As part of promotion for the "We the People Bookshelf" grant that the Marinette libraries received from the Department of the Humanities, guest reader and library director Jennifer Thiele went on a cross-library tour to talk about the bookshelf and images through history. Stories were read, flags were made, and there were preschool parades throughout the libraries.
In Crivitz, the two fourth grade classes came in to learn about Betsy Ross and the history of the flag. Here are a few pictures from that trip.

Jeremy will answer questions such as: Are porcupines born prickly? Can porcupines shoot their quills at enemies? What can I do to get a porcupine to stop eating my siding?

Due to the great response of Mid-County Library Wausaukee Branch's story times, we have decided to offer story time every Wednesday morning at 10:30AM. Miss Vonnie and Miss Karen enjoy reading, singing and doing crafts with the children. Wednesday, May 19 will find ants in the library! We are going on a picnic and will be meeting some ants along the way. Our story time lasts between 30 and 45 minutes and all ages of children are welcome. Donate Books to Marinette Children in Crisis Situations

Through the R.E.A.C.H. a Child organization, the Stephenson Public Library is teaming up with the Marinette Fire Department, Police Department, Bay Area Medical Center Ambulance Services, and the Friends of the Library to put books in the hands of local children experiencing crisis situations. The goal of this endeavor is to put a smile on a child's face in the midst of a personal catastrophe, including domestic violence calls, house fires, car accidents, home displacement, and other traumatic events.

Please partner with us by donating new picture books, board books, and chapter books, which will be given to children when they need our support most. Together we can make a positive difference in the lives of children in our community.

Operation: Military Kids (OMK) is an organization combining the forces of the U.S. Army and local communities to support our military families affected by deployment. With nearly 15,000 military children in the State of Wisconsin, Marinette County is deeply impacted by our military heroes. In an effort to support children and teens dealing with the deployment of parents and family members, OMK has put together a collection of books to aid families and communities in their understanding of how deployment affects children, teens, families and communities. This collection of books is on display at the Stephenson Public Library throughout the month of April and will travel to Marinette County Branch Libraries in months to come.

"Uncommon Facts About Common Birds" Presented by Stan Tekiela at Niagara Library April 20th

The Niagara Public Library, along with the Friends of the Library, are proud to present a program entitled "Uncommon Facts About Common Birds" by noted naturalist, wildlife photographer and writer Stan Tekiela. The program will be held on Tuesday, April 20th at 7:00 p.m. at the Niagara Senior Center which is located at 569 Washington Avenue in Niagara. Librarian Bruce Darne said, "This is a fun and entertaining talk presenting fascinating facts and tidbits about some of the birds that people love to hate. Stan will challenge your preconceived ideas about some common birds such as the European Starling, thet American Crow and much, much more. You will never look at these birds the same way ever again!" The talk will conclude with a strong environmental message of conservation and understanding. Stan's PowerPoint presentations are fun and entertaining, not to mention educational and are filled with extraordinary wildlife photography with interesting gee-whiz facts that will leave you wanting more.
Stan Tekiela is the originator of the popular state-specific field guides such as Birds of (state name) Field Guide, Wildflowers of (state name), and Trees of (state name). Over the past two decades Stan has authored more than 100 field guides, nature appreciation books and wildlife audio CDs for nearly every state in the nation, presenting many species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, trees, wildflowers and cacti.
Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural History from the University of Minnesota and as an active professional naturalist for more than 20 years, Stan studies and photographs wildlife throughout the United States and has received various national and regional awards for his books and photos.
A well-known columnist and radio personality, Stan's syndicated column appears in over 20 newspapers and his wildlife programs are broadcast on a number of Midwest radio stations. Stan is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association and Canon Professional Services along with many other professional organizations.

Niagara Public Library to Hold Fundraiser February 5th

The Niagara Public Library, along with the Friends of the Niagara Library, will hold a Super Bowl Chili Cook Out Fundraiser on Friday, February 5th from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Forward Financial Credit Union. The proceeds from this fundraiser will go to offset the costs of an upcoming author visit that will be held in April. This prominent author, Stan Tekiela, hails from Minnesota and is the author of more than 100 popular state-specific field guides, nature appreciation books and wildlife audio CDs for nearly every state in the nation, presenting many species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, trees, wildflowers and cacti. Stan will be presenting his program entitled "Uncommon Facts About Common Birds" on April 20th.

The Friends of the Stephenson Public Library in Marinette will be having a CD cleaning fundraiser December 29th, 30th, and 31st. Dollar-A-Day Boys Presentation at Niagara Public Library on October 20th

Escanaba, Michigan based author Bill Jamerson will present a music and storytelling program about the Civilian Conservation Corps at the Niagara Public Library on Tuesday, October 20th at 6:30 p.m. The hour-long program includes discussing CCC projects in Wisconsin, showing a clip from his PBS film, reading excerpts from his novel and performing original songs he wrote about the CCC. Bill has presented his program at numerous CCC reunions around the country.
In his talk, Bill will discuss his research methods, some of the interesting enrollees he has met over the years and CCC projects he has visited. A question and answer period and book signing will follow his presentation. Former CCC'ers and their families are encouraged to attend. Wausaukee Library celebrates Wisconsin Historical Preservation and Archaeology Month On Wednesday, May 20th at 4PM the Wausaukee Library will host an informal discussion with our own local archaeologist, Robert Hruska. Mr. Hruska has a long list of credentials which include heading a dig at the Riverside site on the Menominee River and being the curator of the Oshkosh Public Museum. Mr. Hruska will bring along several artifacts that he has discovered in the Wausaukee area. One of the discussion topics will be How to Look for Artifacts. DeYoung Family Zoo to Appear at Niagara Library on May 5th

Join us on Tuesday, May 5th at 6:00 p.m. for a very special presentation that will be put on by "Big Cat Carrie" from the DeYoung Family Zoo. Carrie will allow you to get up close and personal with the variety of baby animals she plans on bringing. Some possibilities are a baby dingo, baby wolf, baby brown bear and baby kangaroo. Carrie also promises to bring some exotic animals and a surprise or two.
This event will be held at the Heights Park Pavilion. Based on the attendance at last years program, we would suggest that you bring something to sit on. Bake sale in Crivitz!

Don't forget that the Crivitz public library will be having a bake sale tomorrow December 5th starting at 9am! Cookies, candies and other baked goods will be available. All proceeds will benefit the library.
While you are enjoying the bakery, don't forget to put in your bid for the quilt raffle. The winner will be announced December 19th!

WrestleMania Reading Challenge

Kids and teens grades 5 through 12 have the chance win 2 tickets to see WrestleMania XXV in Texas, plus $2,000 for a public library. Sounds good, doesn't it?

Here's what you need to do: Between now and January 12, you must read 10 items (books, magazines, newspapers, or graphic novels) and create a bookmark expressing the theme "why reading is important." The bookmarks will be judged locally, and the top three entries will advance to a regional competition. First place winners at the regional competition will win money for their libraries, tickets to see WrestleMania, and a chance to win ring-side seats!

Stop by the Crivitz, Goodman-Dunbar, Niagara, Peshtigo, Stephenson Public Library in Marinette, or the Wausaukee library for a page log to keep track of what you read and a bookmark sheet to create your masterpiece. Call Mariel at 732-7570 for more information.
